Help with layers please

I have just made my first wibsite and i thought it went very well untill i went round a friends house and looked at it.....everything on the page moved to the left....after playing around i worked out that it was the resolution that had made this happen(i made it on my pc at 1024 by 768 and his was 1280 by 1024) i made the site with dreamweaver 8 and used layers to do the whole page,everything looked like it was in the middle. PLEASE can someone tell me what i am doing wrong and how to fix this proble....than you
