Does any one know how to turn off the status bar completly?

uncheck 'Status Bar'

This is a user controlled setting. In javascript, unless you are opening a new window, you have no control. And, due to heightened security features in most browsers, even then you don't. The status bar is there so users can see what link they might be about to activate.

You can control what it shows but, even that is becoming increasingly impossible due to added security features and will soon become impossible altogether.
