    Default 404 error on mouseover of the dropdown menu

    1) Script Title: chrome.js (?)

    2) Script URL (on DD): http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamici...mejs/chrome.js

    3) Describe problem: Mouseover of the drop down menu gives a 404 error
    After working well for a long time I am now getting an error on mouseover of the drop down menu. The menu still works but I get an error displayed on the web page. Here is the error messages (2).

    Not Found
    The requested URL /website/blank.htm was not found this server.
    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered when trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle this request.

    The messages are repeated / displayed twice

    I get the drift of the message but I do not know where to fix this message.

    Hmm inside the .js file, try setting the following line to 0:

    Code:
    enableiframeshim: 0, //enable "iframe shim" in IE5.5 to IE7? (1=yes, 0=no)
    If that doesn't help please post a link to the page on your site that contains the problematic script so we can check it out.

    Thank You. I think that took care of it. I need to check it out more fully but I think this works.

    Thanks will do that today.

    Here is the URL www.airinformatics.com/AboutUs.html

    The problem shows up quickly on many of the main bar drop downs but you may have to use the drop down two or three times before the problem shows upl

    Oddly the problem with the scrip does not act that way immediately. I get one or two clear drop down uses and they it does it every time. I am puzzled why the error says airinformatics/blank.html (no dot com given). Is there a bad call somewhere?

    Hi

    That did not work. I had previously set it to 0 and the issue remained. I have set the flag in both zero and one to without any impact or success.

    I am still puzzled by the 404 message and the airinformatics/blank.html, Is something set wrong or not properly defined? What is making that call?

    If you are interested it is on www.airinformatics.com/AboutUs.html

    Thanks

    I'm not getting that error. What browser are you using?

    I am getting an error:

    chrome.js:176 Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'getElementsByTagName' of null
    Which if I recall correctly means you have an element in the menu with no drop downs, but that still has a rel attribute (dropmenu# - where # is some number) identifying it as having a drop down. But it might mean something else. Also as I recall this isn't generally a fatal issue. It may or may not be related to the error you are seeing. In any case - we would need to know which browser and what version of that browser you are seeing the 404 error you describe in order to have a better chance at resolving this.

    HI John
    I get it on Safari, Opera, Firefox, and iOS (iPad). It shows up on the second mouse over. That is you pull up the site and select one of the drop down menus, say About Us and it is fine. It shows up when you mouse over any of the menu items the second the subsequent times. It is consistent. I am using the latest version of each browser.

    I have used the code for nearly 5 years but it was only last year the error popped up. I can send you a screen shot if you like.

    Your error makes sense, however.

    Here is the code for the more complex menu construction

    Code:
    <div id="menubar" style="height: 31px; left: -1px; position: absolute; center: 0px; top: 123px; width: 801px; z-index: 20;" class="style_SkipStroke_3 shape-with-text">
    <div class="text-content style_External_334_31" style="padding: 0px;" >

    <div id="ddtopmenubar" class="chromemenu">

    Hmm, I'm just not getting that error in Opera or Firefox (also both latest versions). I did figure out what the error I am getting is from, you are not actually using the Chrome Menu. Here, where you go to initialize it:

    Code:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    cssdropdown.startchrome("chromemenu")
    </script>
    You are giving the class name of the menu container, it's expecting the id. And it's just as well, because, since you are using the Dynamic Drive All Levels Navigational Menu, also activating the Chrome Menu on the same content would create a real mess.

    Since I don't get the error you are (I do see it in your screen shot), I would recommend fixing a couple of things and seeing if they help. 1.) The character encoding declaration is too far down in the page's code, causing the browser to reload the page. Move all this:

    Code:
      <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

        <meta name="Generator" content="iWeb 3.0.1" />
        <meta name="iWeb-Build" content="local-build-20090517" />
        <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />
        <meta name="viewport" content="width=800" />

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us" />
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
    <meta name="description" content= "Air Informatics data information delivery Mission" />
    <meta name="keywords" content="aviation,digital,e-enabled,aircraft,operations,e-enabling,analysis,Boeing,Gulfstream,engines,airport,informatics,wireless,security,transfer,airlines,Bombardier,cost,terminal,management,savings,787" />

    <meta http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache" />
    <meta http-equiv="Expires" content="-1" />
    to right after the title tag.

    And, since it's not being used anyway, get rid of chrome.js and the call to it (delete):

    Code:
    <script type="text/javascript" src="AboutUs_files/chrome.js">
    /***********************************************
    * Chrome CSS Drop Down Menu- (c) Dynamic Drive DHTML code library (www.dynamicdrive.com)
    * This notice MUST stay intact for legal use
    * Visit Dynamic Drive at http://www.dynamicdrive.com/ for full source code
    ***********************************************/
    </script>

    <script type="text/javascript">
    cssdropdown.startchrome("chromemenu")
    </script>
    I'm pretty sure those two things will not fix it, but they might. If the don't, let me know so I can check out the page again.

    Please also read my previous post. I think you should still make those changes. However, I've figured out the problem. You gave us the address to the page as http . . . while you are viewing it as https . . . If I switch to the secure layer I now also see the error and it is coming from the ddlevelsmenu.js script (https://www.airinformatics.com/ddlevelsfiles/ddlevelsmenu.js). To avoid it, either make up a page named "blank.htm" and put it in the same secure folder containing the page. OR - and this is probably preferable, in the ddlevelsmenu.js file, set the:

    Code:
    //** All Levels Navigational Menu- (c) Dynamic Drive DHTML code library: http://www.dynamicdrive.com
    //** Script Download/ instructions page: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/ddlevelsmenu/
    //** Usage Terms: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/notice.htm

    //** Current version: 3.02 See changelog.txt for details

    if (typeof dd_domreadycheck=="undefined") //global variable to detect if DOM is ready
    	var dd_domreadycheck=false

    var ddlevelsmenu={
    enableshim: true, //enable IFRAME shim to prevent drop down menus from being hidden below SELECT or FLASH elements? (tip: disable if not in use, for efficiency)

    arrowpointers:{
    	downarrow: ["ddle . . .
    to false, save and use that version.

    Hi John

    That worked. I had to set enabledshim: false to get it to work.

    I now need to do some clean up work per your suggestions on the other pages but it worked.

    THANKS!

    Bruce
