What is PHP Photo Album script sort date

I am using the sortby: ["date", "asc"], //["file" or "date", "asc" or "desc"] option.
What is the date used for the sort?
All my images contain date taken info which is what I had hopped to use.

It uses the server time of when the images were uploaded.
