Question background music on website preference?

My buddy has been asking me to put background sounds on a few websites. example site I recently made

I love how that came out and the waves sound really apply to the site. It's easy to stop the sound with the button.

My question is does having sounds play in the background become a deterrent to people looking over your site or do you think that it's a turn off?
    thanks
    Mike

I think it's best if any sounds used on a page are off to begin with. Waves are pretty inoffensive. But even with those - for example, I'm listening to a Brahms piano concerto on the radio, the waves clashed with it. So I quickly turned them off. I don't like videos on FB for the same reason. I'm listening to music or news while I'm virtually visiting with my friends. I don't like it when one of them "bursts into the room carrying a blaring boombox".

Well, if you are using WordPress, you will be able to add music player to your site very easily, however, this article may also give you some clues for doing this:

My vote is No. I think there is no good site with background music.

I wouldn't go that far. But a good site is not improved by background sound that starts as the page loads. If there are sounds, as I said, best that they are off when the page loads. A selection of sounds can be nice. Especially for a musician's/band's site. But again, these sounds should all be off to begin with. Let the user turn them on if they want to.

With the site in question, I might be tempted to have the wave sound fire on mouse over of the banner image and stop on mouse out. But even that can be intrusive.

This thread is attracting lots of "me too" and other generic "I agree" replies with little value, so I'm closing it. If anyone has any valuable insight over and above what John has already said, please start another thread and refer back to this one with a link.
