I saw this effect in a HTML about bleeding hearts
how do I substitute a heart gif for the snow [or leaf]?

In the code, where it has the name(s) of the image(s) used to represent the snow or leaves, substitute the image name(s) you want to use. Make sure the path (if different than the page's) to the images is correct in the code. You can probably save yourself some time by choosing an updated version of such a script that can handle many of the newer browsers and code conventions like one I modded here. It can be configured to go up (as in the demo) or down.
