I want to turn my home computer into a proxy server for use at work. How do I write a proxy that can be accessed remotely?

There's no need to write a proxy, there are many already available. Try Squid, a popular, professional, and free HTTP cache and proxy. Any web services you run on your PC can already be accessed remotely, unless you're behind a firewall.

Squid is blocked. I haven't found one that isn't blocked. other than an HTML proxy, what other way could there be?

1. There is no such thing as an HTML proxy. You probably mean an HTTP proxy, the protocol over which HTML is commonly sent.
2. What do you mean, it's "blocked?" It's impossible to block an application, although one can block traffic or ports. You are behind a firewall? In this case, you can:
   1. Use a different port, that isn't blocked
   2. Reconfigure the firewall (or ask someone to do it for you).

Well, it's not going to, I'm afraid. Anyone sniffing the traffic on your network (and looking carefully at the results) will not only notice you downloading the proxy, but also notice whenever you use it.

You may want to try a proxy that many big companies are not yet aware of, lockproxy.com. This proxy takes a slightly different approach...

or, you could use the Google translater as a sort of proxy,

example:
http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.myspace.com

if all you want to do is read some information off of the page you could use the cache of google, if the site is listed.

You could try:

1. Using a firewall
2. Using an IP hiding software
3. Doing it in an internet cafe and tranferring it via usb
4. Using Internet Trace Cleaners

(I would highly prefer No. 3 though)

For some reason, s/he was talking about downloading a proxy on the corporate network, then (presumably) taking it home. I was pointing out that this would almost certainly be detected.

You could use a live distro like Tails: https://tails.boum.org/ It has an option to use FoxyProxy or Tor.

Use Yumi: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-mu...t-usb-creator/ to load it to a bootable pen drive.
