    John,
    I prefer Molendijk to Nixondyke, so I examined the flicker thing in (yet) more detail. I noticed that using your domit function for manipulating the DOM permits a more unified inclusion method. Including a menu with the help of your function and then 'repeating' the large image on each page works now with ALL browsers. No flicker (except for some rare exceptions with Chrome) anymore, and no need for document.write (which seemed to be a requirement with Chrome when I was trying other inclusion methods). DEMO here.
    I'm happy with this. It would be a good thing though if Google Chrome (and IE) fixed their flicker problem.
