why has it chopped the end of the snippet text ?

FYI for others that have come across this the answer is to edit the following :
newsfeed.displayoptions("snippet") //show the specified additional fields
to
newsfeed.displayoptions("description") //show the specified additional fields
This will now show the full news item

I would add that in many cases the snippet is to be preferred as oftentimes the description is extremely long and/or includes large images.
