Help with calender

Im at uni and designing my first web page.
Ive got a space on the top left of my front page and want to put a calender there. For one I cant get this to work on my page and I dont understand how I to move this to different positions on my page by just changing the code.

I want to put in the version of this that lets you change the month with a drop down.
Can someone please help?
