yeah, they're _completely_ unrelated. w3schools has some good info, but it's mixed up with inaccurate stuff, bad practice, and misleading tutorials. They're just there to make money.

Part of why I thought they were the real deal was, of course, the w3 in their name. And also the fact that they sold $100 certificates in CSS and other things.

In the reply I got, she said it was too long for a reply, but she replied anyway and said lack of images is what caused me to get a B-, and presumably everyone else to get a higher grade. I should have stole some images too and put them on my site, what was I thinking? She then said to come back to campus over summer break if I wanted to talk about it. Yeah, okay professor.

But it's not an image gallery in any sense, while some of the other sites are, or at least have navigational images as a main focus on the page. If that's what the instructor was looking for, then it should have been clear from the beginning, but that's the sort of thing that can happen when they aren't grading based on how advanced a site is, but compared to what they are expecting. For future reference, I'd suggesting asking for an example of what they expect and building your site around that, rather than trying to be too creative-- unless the instructor makes it clear that they like creativity.
I think this partly has to do with two different points of view about web design:
1. Web design is a functional medium used for conveying information, allowing interaction and generally connecting people.
2. Web design is a web-based version of powerpoint where you display things, demonstrating that you know how to use the tools of the web specifically to display these things, but not necessarily beyond that.
In other words, it's a "functional" vs. "gallery" approach. If you look at your site as a "gallery" it is severely lacking-- that has nothing to do with it being a bad site, but it doesn't match one view of what web design should be. (I completely disagree with this point of view, but that's irrelevant to your grade.)

true.
1) you can't always expect to be graded based on the quality of your work
2) you can usually expect to be graded based on how well your work meets the assignment criteria
3) you can always expect to be graded based on your teacher's expectations
The course site said I got a B- in the course, but my actual transcript said B. I even added up the points myself and it came out to a B-. Makes me think she did up my score at the last second before submitting the grades, even though she didn't tell me she would.
As for the images, she said there was a lack of them and that I should incorporate more images throughout the site that are unified with the header images. I agree with that, but knocking the grade down to a B- is a little harsh. But I can't complain since I have a magical B now.
And for your amusement, I'll post a few more of their sites, there is a total of about 15-20.

As much as I dislike ridiculing these people's work, my B- justifies it, haha. I mean given the 4 months they had to learn all this, I am surprised they turned out this good.
And none of them have favicons either. I thought maybe the UMD severs do not allow them, but I do not see any favicon code in the random three sites I checked.
