Post Vertical CSS Menu in Wordpress Header

I'm designing a Wordpress theme for a friend of mine and I would like to add a vertical menu in the header to the left of the logo. I know I can do this by coding in a new divided widget area (divided 70% for the logo/30% for the vmenu) into the header (which would create a widget box in the WP widget area), but thought there may be an easier way to work around all the extra coding. Does any one here know how this could be done without the need to create a new widget area for the header? And if so, how? I will only have 7 links so the vmenu won't have subs. The width will be 240px and the height around 380px. I already have the vmenu designed, and even used the WP Custom Menu creator once thinking I would be able to position it inside the header with the widget it creates, but no such luck.

    Thanks,
    Caleb
