how do i hide and dispay form fields based on users selections? please help

Hello
To start with i'm a complete novice in web design and i find JavaScript very interesting, anyway i'm just trying to learn it myself,
i'm trying to build a registration page for a school (not real) that will involve selecting of faculties, and then departments and then courses from form inputs and select fields, how do i make some input and select fields hidden and then display then based on the users selection,
i hope i'm making sense here, and is it even possible?
any assistance will be highly appreciated,
