    Default GoogleFu game

I could just have a mutated case of turkey-head, but I thought the Lounge needed a game to test research skills. So, here goes.

As challenges are posted, you will have 1 week to solve them. Their solutions will be posted every Thursday. The winner gets... well, nothing, really.

    CHALLENGE 1
    Expiration Date: December 3, 2009

There is an animal whose photo is linked back to from an article on each of two Web sites, one of which's English version is one of the top 5 websites in the world, and the other is owned by the same company. Both articles are in different non-English languages, and said photo is the only photo linked back to on 50% of all these articles. This photo is a derivative work of a larger photo. Now, there is a website out there with an important property--its title contains this animal's name, the sound its species makes, and only 1 other syllable. This web page contains 3 things--an illustration of the animal from the photo, a form, and a disclaimer. What is the number of letters in the body part of the animal that the original photo documents, subtracted from the number of letters that the property of the webservers has (per the disclaimer)?

Oh, right. Rules. You can only use the Internet.
I don't care what search engine you use. I recommend GoodSearch. It's the only possible way for geeks to ever get around to donating to charity. Like random animal shelters in rural Washington State. That was a link, by the way.

Sorry about that. The turkey-head is back.

    Hints:
Both articles are on a part of the eye, which is only rudimentary in humans and most primates.
The derivative work is simply a cropped version of the original photo.
The articles are on the same topic.
One of the articles is in the language with the ISO code nl.
The company owning both websites (the one with articles) is a nonprofit organization.
Both websites can be accessed for free.
This animal was adopted from the animal shelter linked to.
The animal's name is in the photo's filename, and is the photo's filename, minus .JPG.
I am the proud owner of this animal.

Well, what is the answer to the question? The answer should be in the form of a number... and it's not 6.

Thursday, December 3 came and went, so all answers are now invalid. The correct answer was 3.
    Thank you for playing.

If anyone cares, a new challenge will surface on Monday, January 4.

Well yeah.. heheh... I just said that since nobody else answered.. Maybe you could give more clues if the game is too hard... and when you give the answer, maybe you should actually explain the whole thing, not just say it's 2.. that doesn't tell me anything... sorry.. just some feedback that would make this fun..

From the Wikipedia article on the nictitating membrane, remember that both articles are non-English. Go to "This article in..." and find the link at nl.wikipedia.org. Hmm. The same picture's there. Since that picture was on the English Wikipedia, that can't be the right one. The only sister project that would make sense to hace this article would be Wiktionary. So translate 'nictitating membrane' into as many languages as possible. Find which one has an article on nl.wikipedia. Click all the pictures. Notice that, by Commons search, the one of the dog eye is on a Wikipedia. So that's the right one. Go to the original, and remove .JPG from the filename. We have 'Booduh.' Dogs say 'woof.' So google 'Booduh woof.' The first result's title is 'Booduh "Wooftalk".' 'Talk' has one syllable. Go there. Look! Picture. Form. This must be the right one. Look! A disclaimer! All submissions are sent directly to Booduh over secure webservers. Webservers! They're secure! The derivative work was of an eye ('Booduh eye.JPG'). Eye = 3 letters. Secure = 6 letters. 6 - 3 = 3. Yay. It's 3.
