what exactly does this do, and what happens if this link gets changed by google, will our gallery stop working, if so can this script be made to be self contained on our server?

It's highly unlikely the Google reference above will ever be taken offline by Google, so you should be good. If you feel better hosting that file yourself though, you can simply download jQuery yourself, then change the reference to point to that file on your server instead.

All correct, obviously. I would just like to add that it isn't really AJAX. The jQuery library includes an AJAX api (routines really), thats why it is included in the Google AJAX api list of scripts that may be hot linked to. However, the Ultimate Fade-in slideshow script doesn't use any AJAX, and neither does simply linking to the jQuery library hosted on Google.

And - the beauty of linking to the script on Google is that, as many folks do so for their sites, chances are good that the script will already be cached by your first time users. This speeds page load and functionality.
