    Default HVMenu and CSS

i've been using HVMenu 5.5 for a while now. very happy with it overall, but for a new client, i need to gain some additional style control over it via CSS. i've tried quite a few things, but i am having trouble getting anything to happen. i'm not very good with JS - does anyone have any suggestions?

the biggest thing i need to accomplish is the creation of a top border on the 2nd and 3rd level menu items, and NOT the 1st level).

i'd really like to get classes or IDs assigned to each element, so i can do all the styling via CSS rather than the config. anyone had any luck with something similar?
