Not the most intuitive thing to do; the menu.

You need to make your initial button. In it's onover option you need to add an mc that will drop down the other buttons (make sure you place a blank box inside that mc dropdown behind the buttons so that when you move your mouse off the original button to the next one below, it doesn't loose the onover property because of the blank space in between the two). Surrounding all the buttons you'll need to make one big button, or four different one's so that when a mouse hovers over it (goes away from the drop down menu) it will close the mc / button.

    Hope this makes sense.

For the transition I would start with a solid black square. And cut chunks away at it, blurring the edges, and tweening. Probably not the easiest thing to make it look that smooth. Take for instance Shamaylon's (M knight) SP? website. His transitions are unbelievable; must have took forever to get right. So is the new harry potter site; don't care for potter, but the effect / transitions are amazing.
