    Default doctype and html version

    ok I'm really confused. I keep reading about using the correct doctype based on what type of html I'm using (HTML 4.01 Strict, HTML 4.01 Transitional, HTML 4.01 Frameset, XHTML 1.0 Strict, etc,etc).
    How do I find out what version of html I'm using. I'm a self taught programmer that uses HTML-kit to write my programs.
