Image Gallery-which approach?

I have found a number of tutorials for creating image galleries but I am trying to find a way to make it such that I can just drop an new image into the appropriate directory and it will automatically be added to the gallery.

Which approach will allow me to do this most easily. BTW the look i am going for is the one where you have the main full size image on display and a row of thumbnails at the bottom. It is not necessary that they be animated.
