Question European characters cannot be displayed in Smooth Navigational Menu (v1.3)

    1) Script Title: Smooth Navigational Menu (v1.3)

    2) Script URL (on DD): http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamici...smoothmenu.htm

    3) Describe problem: The menu displaying "?" characters instead of UTF-8 characters:
    See this webpage for demo:
    http://www.pumi.org/geza/dynamicindexH/test.html

This is the menu text that is in the smoothmenu.htm file:

    Kutya
    Kutya Magazine - 03/2006
    Kutya Magazine - 03/2006
    Kutya Magazine - 11/2007
Magyar fajta kutyák tenyésztés irányitása - 06/1998
    Miért Szeretem a Pumit? - 04/1999
Bemutatjuk Skobrák Ferenc népi fafaragót - 05/1999

This a Hungarian text but the fonts belong to the same character family that is used by the German, Swedish and other European languages.

Is there any way to fix this problem?

What character encoding are you using? Because if it's anything but UTF-8 (or higher) change it to UTF-8(or higher)

This should widen the characters available to be displayed.

    Hope this helps,

This is an Ajax encoding issue, which I haven't really researched into yet. You can check out a solution discussed here, or switch to the inline version of the menu (instead of Ajax) for the time being.

Since I have to update several hundreds of pages with this menu, I'd prefer to add a few lines with a link to an external file to all of them instead of using the in-line version.

I read the page that you were referring to, but it's too heavy for me. I found this webpage, that talks about applying utf-8 encoding to different type of files:
    http://www.w3.org/International/O-charset
but I am not sure which file of this menu it should be applied to and how.

    Do you have any idea?

    Thumbs up

I found the problem the menu not being able to display utf-8 (European) characters, you just have to convert the utf-8 menu list html file to none utf-8 file (ANSI), here is URL link where you can do it in a snap:
