instant messaging through a website

does anyone know if it is possible for 2 users to have an online conversation through 2 textfields in a form, 1 for typing a message and one for the conversation board? by entering a message the user would be changing the value of the conversation textbox, which is easy when clientside, but i would need maybe PHP or something to modify the document every time a message was entered? any help much appreciated (even if it is telling me that its not possible ). what i have upto now is located here http://www.yeknom.karoo.net/postmessage.html. it just uses js to add the value of the message text box to the value of the main conversation textbox.
