Animation with photos and MASKS, Not sure how this works

I am rebuilding a this website:

The client wants a similar animation for the homepage, moving masks that enlarge and shrink upon rollover and rollout.
I am at a loss on how to attack this!!
Flash humans!
Is this moving mask collage on the homepage of the above site one movie clip with instances that cause different movement for each menu tab?

Or is each tab a different movie clip with the same animation built into it from the other movie clips?

Any insight would be appreciated on how to do this simple and clean...

Either way would work, but I prefer the first - one movieclip with variable images/text. It makes the code a lot cleaner and shorter.
