I've been fairly successful with some of my first DIVs, but I now may have bitten off more than I can chew.

I'm trying to have the blue strips below the gradient along the left and right, expand as needed to border whatever quantity of content is added to the central text area to almost touch the Footer. (The content would necessarily go below the point where the gradient ends and the solid blue continues.)

I'm trying to convert my initial design, in which I used apDivs, into more proper regular Divs. Here's an example of what I was looking for visually here:
