I have used this successfully for the team 2009 diary.

The script says you can use any type of file but when I originally used a Word document the body script was missing.
I found txt and htm files work OK.

It really depends upon what the browser will do. This type of link is actually intended only to (according to standards):

tell search engines where to find the printed version

and in fact doesn't 'work' at all as an alternate print document in FF.

If you want an alternate document for printing, the better strategy is to use a print stylesheet, which works in all modern browsers. This may be used to alter the existing page to make it more printer friendly. It may even be used to print an entirely different section of the page than is seen on the user's screen.
