text indexing

I wasn't sure where to post this. Could someone post me a link to text indexing? I am trying to learn what it is and how it works in regards to creating a program for searching my site. I have already designed one that uses LIKE (MySQL term), but I would like to learn more about text indexing and am not really sure where to begin.
