changing colors of any image

Hi everyone.

This is my first post here so bear with me.

I'm needing to design a site which would have an image for which the color would change. For instance, toyota.com and hummer.com has the ability to "design your own car." The end user has the ability to click on a color palette and change the color of the car. Would I use javascript to program this or is there an easier way?
