I have some pictures that are very large files 1.2 mb and in bmp format. I would like to to convert them to smaller jpg files. Can anyone advise?

It depends upon how many images and what sort of image programs you have available. Good for just about any job is xat.com's image optimizer. There are many, many other choices.
