    Default Soap Box

Why is it that there are loads of people who just seem to sign up to this forum and suggest a couple of script that they have found via google and dump them into a new thread with the request to make them work differently?

I would understand if these people wanted to learn how to do things or need genuine help but there seems to be alot who just want to pull on apron strings to get things done. I thought as the world of web dev got more complicated, it would seperate those who really want to do this stuff with those who just want to make it happen. I still, through my own judgement post responses on these threads helping those but what really grinds me up further is that these people grab the answer and do a bunk without even responding with a thank you. If you look at my profile and find the responses Ive answered you will find that I have had NO-ONE thank me!

Im sure the world would turn a little easier if people just took a thought for a little common decency.

Oh well, Im sure all of these people eat raw meat and pillage villages when there not coding

Anyone got anything else to blow steam about? (appart from me moaning! )

    Kind regards
    Dal

First of all, Congratulations on your first thanked post. I'm certain you'll have good numbers on it.

Back to the topic. I'm with you Dal, but we can never force them to click the vivid red sign of gratitude. At most, what's important (just a thought), is that at every member's problem, we see the opportunity for a fix which translates to our coding skills' growth.

Don't get unto despair Dal (I believe you are'nt), just help. Remember the adage that states: "The best gift in the world would come in such an unexpected package".

    Hope it keeps you going.

Dear Dal & Rangana: This is exactly why I thanked everyone - to show them how much I appreciated their spending their valuable time to consider my little problem and sharing of their greater knowledge. The irony is that I think it was from thanking you (Rangana) so much when you helped me make a little disappearing div that got me in trouble. I want to encourage people to share their ideas and their knowledge because then we all learn and get better at coding. I can't wait for the day when I can express myself in php as easily as I type a letter, but until that day, it is very painful when I keep beating my head against the wall not knowing what is wrong with my code. Always I am working on a live site so the delay causes great inconvenience to other people which makes me feel even worse. So when someone helps me, I am extremely grateful. I look forward to the day when I have enough knowledge to be able to contribute more solutions than questions.

I'm surprised that people don't use the Thanks button if that is what it's for. But then again, there are a heck of a lot of ungrateful people out there, so I guess that is par for the course. Now I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to get banned from the forum for being too grateful. Very confusing. Anyway, just know that you both are very much appreciated and I apologize on behalf of all the inconsiderate moochers who should learn some manners. Aloha, erin

I never had anything against you kuau. Since you took the time to write that tells me that you are a good person. Im sure who ever told you that you shouldnt thank so much was probably worried incase you went into some thanking spam. It was probably way out of line and Im sure you wont get banned. I might for saying all this but Im prepared for that. I am a member of another programming descussion group and have been since 2003 and I was around when the vBulleting implemented thanks button in that forum, never been told to hold back there but encouraged to thank those who need thanks. Im going to thank you now for supporting the cause. Im sure you will progress in PHP fine with that kind of ambition. Good luck in everything you do kuau.

    Kind regards
    Dal

As stated before in this post:

I have personally helped out some users on this forum and have written custom made scripts for them for free and not one single "Thanks" for those. I am not complaining about this, but it is sad how someone may think that a post saying "Glad to have helped" thankful as compared to custom written code for that same user's demands not being helpful at all. Then again, that is just the way the world turns. There are just some people out there that you could give the world to and still wouldn't be happy. Just my opinion.

I must confess that, while reading various threads in the past, I would see this amazing, killer code being freely given to someone and that person not even thanking the person, so I would thank them just because they deserved it.

I think I may have misunderstood about the thanking. I think I get it now. Thanks! e

Some people, may not know what it is even after looking at it and decide not to touch it...?

Some people, yes; but not all the time. The one I am referring to (which happened a while back), the user actually did use the script on their website, did not post any credit on that site as to where the script came from, no thanks in the forums, or anything to that effect. Again, not really complaining, but just something that bugs me when I see people like that every day at work.

Me too. In the instance to which I was referring, the user said that the solution was just what they needed and they used it and yet did not thank the person who wrote the code.
