??? about percentages

Hi, I made a site for my church and the url is http://luzadmirable.net. Ok, now its a css based layout, the width is 760px. And in 1024 by 768 resolution, it looks fine. But many of my viewers are using 1028 by 1024 resolution.

Now I want to make a totally new layout that would cover 98% of the whole page. My question is how I would do that? I know how to make a website using percentages, but what I don't understand, is how the pictures will work. For example, say I want to use the banner I'm using now at the top of the site. Now, if I set it to lets say 760px, and the width of the resolution is 1028 by 1024, won't that leave a white space in the baner head?

I don't know if you understand me, but please help me?
