Doctype messing up my site

Basic question here. I have a site I'm editing. Every time I try to ad a doctype to each page. (there Isn't one now) it messes some items up. Mostly CSS stuff.

Any ideas? I use dreamweaver

I can think of two obvious reasons...

1) You're using the wrong doctype.
2) You're using non-standards compliant code that breaks in standards mode

It's hard to know without viewing the site in question.

in the future can you please provide us more information. saying my site is broken but not explaining or better yet giving us an example of your code (url or post here) will not enable us to help you solve your problem
