    Default Lightbox Script / Windows Vista

    I have been using the Lightbox script on my website for a year or more and it works fine - I was using Windows XP & IE7 to view the website all well. I have got a new PC which came with Windows Vista / IE7 and when I view the website the image goes to a new window. If viewed on my oldy PC all ok. I have looked to see if Scripts are enabled, and they are any suggestions much appreciated.

    Cheers
    David

    This almost undoubtedly has to do with settings in Vista and/or the copy of IE 7 on the Vista machine. In IE 7 custom security, is javascript (Active scripting) enabled? If so, are both:

    Binary and script behaviors

    and:

    Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting

    enabled?

    Possibly you need:

    Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins

    enabled as well. You do need that for Flash, and for other plug-ins to work.

    I'm also curious, is IE 7 Vista reporting any errors?

    Well, unfortunately I don't have Vista to test on here. So, you would need to test this. Does the demo page on Dynamic Drive work in your IE 7 under Vista?

    If so, it's something to do with your implementation, if not, it's something to do with the Vista computer.

    If it is the Vista computer, there may be a Vista security setting or a third party firewall or anti-virus program that is blocking one or more of the things IE 7 requires to execute the lightbox script. As it stands, it is acting as though the script isn't installed/being executed.

    Also, after a page with lightbox on it from your site that works on the old computer loads up on the new computer, you can paste this into the address bar of the new computer:

    Code:
    javascript:document.write('<textarea>'+document.body.innerHTML+'<\/textarea>')
    That should replace the page with a small textarea (if it doesn't, javascript is somehow disabled on the Vista machine). Select and copy the text in it and paste to a message here. Use:

    [CODE]
    paste your text here
    [/C
    ODE]

    To format it properly. That will tell me somethings about how much if at all the IE 7 Vista is executing the script.

    I haven't had issues with smoothbox in ie7, on top of that, it comes fully CSS compliant.

    You can test it out on my portfolio: www.chasery.com

    Smoothbox is based off the jQuery version of Thickbox.

    Well, you haven't answered my question about the lightbox demo page here on Dynamic Drive. Does that work on your Vista machine?

    As to your code pasted into your message, it really doesn't tell me much. I would need to see the end of it, the part generated by the lightbox script, which would look something like so if the script is active at all:

    Code:
    <DIV id=overlay style="DISPLAY: none"></DIV>
    <DIV id=lightbox style="DISPLAY: none">
    <DIV id=outerImageContainer style="WIDTH: 250px; HEIGHT: 250px">
    <DIV id=imageContainer><IMG id=lightboxImage title="" alt="No Image Loaded/Selected">
    <DIV id=hoverNav><A id=prevLink href="#"></A><A id=nextLink href="#"></A></DIV>
    <DIV id=loading><A id=loadingLink href="#"><IMG height=32 src="images/loading.gif" width=32></A></DIV></DIV></DIV>
    <DIV id=imageDataContainer>
    <DIV id=imageData>
    <DIV id=imageDetails><SPAN id=caption></SPAN><SPAN id=numberDisplay></SPAN></DIV>
    <DIV id=bottomNav><A id=bottomNavClose href="#"><IMG height=22 src="images/closelabel.gif" width=66></A></DIV></DIV></DIV></DIV>

    The problem isn't IE 7, the lightbox script works fine in that. The issue seems to relate to Vista, but it might just be something else on Stoney's new computer, or something to do with Stoney's implementation. However, smoothbox looks like a nice script. There are many lightbox clones out there. If this one takes care of the problem for Stoney, that's fine with me.

    John,
    Thanks for your help - Sorry I should have said that I can not see the demo on the Dynamic Drive website - same issue - picture opens on a blank page.

    Full code below (took it from a smaller page)

    Many Thanks
    Cheers
    David

    Chasery,
    Thanks also for your reply, ideally I would like to get lightbox working, rather than redo the complete websites - but if all esle fails! I may have to
    Cheers

    I did some digging, and managed to see the lightbox work propally at the following location:

    http://www.lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/

    But it does not work on the following location or on my websites:

    http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamici...box2/index.htm

    Note the above works ok on my old PC with Windows XP and IE7, but not on my new PC with Windows Vista and IE7.

    Any suggestions?

    Many Thanks

    Cheers
    David

    It's late and I'm tired, so I reserve the right to be wrong. From what I know though, Lokesh is using/promoting a new version.

    I can also say that in certain minor respects, this new version leaves out some specific ease of use features, but they are very minor. If his new version works for you, I'd say download and use the code for it.

    It is all but obvious that one of the reasons for the new code is the problem you are having with the older code.
