CSS Image Gallery popup in new div?

3) Describe problem:

I would like to place the Gallery Container div in a div (div1) and have the images popup in a different div (div2). I have always been a bit confused about absolute and relative positioning (I've just usually tried both and used the one that works!)
(oh! And it's a pre-existing div that I want to have the images pop-up in, I just want them to overlay what's already there)
Is it even possible to do this? Thanks SO much!
