attach file to email

does anyone know the method in which a document actually gets attached to an email?

I have been thinking about providing a link to "email this file" on one of the sites I run and instead of giving the link, I would like to attach the actual file to the email.
I did a bunch of searches on Google in relation to "attach file email" but wound up going no where fast. Just wondering if anyone knew of how a file actually gets attached to an email.
