In my personal opinion a comparison of technologies should not be like this. We need to compare technologies thoroughly before reaching a conclusion. In the following URL you can find such a comparison.

We were half-joking. Flash is at 9.0. Silverlight is at 1.0. So, Flash would have been much more mature than Silverlight. Maybe in like 15 years time, we'll see. For now, Flash is fine as it is.
Silverlight's features are pretty good, but not many people have it on their computers compared to Flash. Perhaps when Microsoft bribes more major company websites to use Silverlight, more people would have it on their computers.

I'm glad to have some competition against Flash-- never really liked it. But a microsoft product? One step forward, two steps back.

Flash is a plugin — it doesn't 'work for some sites', because it should never be used to construct a whole site, for which we already have HTML and Javascript, which are more powerful, not plugins, standardised, platform-independent, and actually designed for the task. It works for some parts of some sites, with HTML backup where possible.

Personally I'm always a bit "antsy" about new Microsoft technologies entering a field that is already pretty mature as they have a bad history of forcing the technology into the market in order to maintain a monopoly and breaking standards agreed upon internationally just to lock people into their proprietary formats...
Remember JavaScript, CSS, SOAP, XML Document formats and many more.....
I agree with that. Technically platform support is being addressed by the Linux clone Moonlight, but legally this could become a bit of a minefield, as well as allowing Microsoft to set the standard.

I wouldn't touch silverlight with a 10 foot vista OS.
MS really needs to recover from the vista debacle before folks will begin embracing other new software ideas from them, with the possible exception of IE 8 which has had good press in the virtual world for the most part.
But I believe that they can, will, and must. Much like they did with Windows 3.0, which sucked eggs big time. But time's a wasting MS, get on the stick!
