Firefox Issue - bgcolor not seen

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I'm trying to change the look of our homepage and I thought I'd start with something simple. It's a menu of recent news items.

I've got it working so it looks correct in IE, but the bgcolor isn't appearing in Firefox.

The way it used to look can be found on the site's homepage.

Ideally, there will just be a fix where I can get it to work. If not, is there a browser check I can use to keep the old look for Firefox?

They look the same in FF2.0 and IE7 on my PC.
