Well, Java doesn't like my computer. There's a slight lag every time I load an applet, but no lag for Flash.

Yes, but Java is downloading and installing specific packages (JARs) that the applet creator wrote specifically for that applet, every time. Hence the lag.
If Flash had to download AS rules or something there would be a similar effect.

Sun employs many of the developers for OO.org' which is doing well.
I don't see anything going badly.
Besides, if Sun does try anything funny, anyone can just grab the source off of a mirror and rebrand it.
