It really depends. Do you have many images on the forum? Heavy traffic? How big will you allow your uploads?

I typically go for the 100gb-1tb range for bandwidth.

no we alway host images and stuff like that on photobucket and other sites.
but im asking because im trying to find a good and cheap webhost that will work with phpbb and ive got a couple in mind but i was wondering how much space/bandwidth i need.
i also want to keep a personel website for testing out html and javascript on a sub-domain.

Then you want Site 5 They have a deal now:

750Gig Storage, 7500gig/Bw/month and unlimited hosted full domains for $5 a month.

I have been with them for going on my 3rd year now. Happiest I have been with a web host yet.

Or you can choose mediatemple, they have a pretty decent package over there.

Depends on the package. Most you pay by the year, which is really less hassle. Some have 3 or 6 month packages as well.

That's very little. You'll do fine with any decent package. It depends on how many images you serve. But, really, let's multiply that out:
1mb per visit (each page is around 10kb, usually, so that's 1000 pages)
    40 visitors each day
    30 days in a month

That's 1200mb bandwidth. And that's on the high end. This is for JUST a forum, though.
Space is very little as well.
    100mb space, 1GB bandwidth, I'd expect you'd be fine.

Media (images, audio, video, in that order) take up more space, so that's the bigger concern.
