Seeing red

A Flash presentaion calls to external swf files. on some computers
the jpegs included inthese external files show up as big red blocks
instead of the image. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling various
flash plug-ins on those computers but the problem continues.

Naturally this is a presentation due to be sent soon to thousands
of customers, and we can't tell people "if it doesn't work, change
your computer"

So has anyone seen this sort of thing and can offer a sollution ?

Without the source files and/or some code it is really difficult to know.

It would all depend on the techniques you're using to bring those images into flash.

Post some relevant code and maybe I or someone else might be able to help you.

The only time I have seen it was when the images were animated gifs and there was the use of Flash's built in "security" features.

You can publish the fla without protection, ensure that you are only calling jpgs, and don't detect the Flash version.

Otherwise, as Medy says, we need to know how you are bringing the images into Flash, and a fla to break apart and look through would help determine any unseen culprits.

Unfortunately this flash presentation is for new products in the field
of homeland security (shielding buildings from rocket attacks, stopping
cars trying to ram through an area, high tech guard posts etc.) so I
doubt if the higher ups will agree to having source code released,
harmless though it may be.

However, we seem to have tracked the problem to an external source.
The computers where the flash turned red were recently formatted and
reinstalled, so one of them was taken through the process again, with
the flash being checked after each driver and software install.

The culprit is apparently the software package which comes with an
Epson printer. the cd has no option for installing only the driver but
goes on to install a whole bunch of stuff, one of which is probably
causing the problem.

So the Federal Government (or a subsidiary thereof) buys Epson products, and they expect us to feel safe with rocket shielded buildings?

I personally like the duct tape and plastic wrap anti-anthrax solution myself. But then again, with the Governments mandatory shots I should be able to breath straight anthrax and be okay anyway.

If you tracked it to 3rd party software, security should be a larger concern. I suggest manually installing the drivers (you can pull them off the CD through the explore back door) and go that way.

This, however, is the first time I have heard of printer software disrupting the viewing of images through an intranet/LAN/What have you.

If you find the exact culprit with proof, could you post back about it?

actually, we're a small firm in Israel. and the flash content isn't from
an intranet but on a cd which is about to be distributed to potential
customers at some expo.

we'll probably demand some answers from Epson's customer service.
I'll let you know if the admit to anything.
