    Hello, I was wondering about what is meant by "Installing Apache PHP and MySQL" on websites such as http://www.php-mysql-tutorial.com/ ?

    it means that on your computer you can install apache and mysql and php to view your php files without uploading them to your site. if you want to install them, an easy installer is WAMP5 Wamp5

    Is it something essential, would I need to install them to do php work?

    if you want to view your php in action without uploading the files to the web server then yes. but to script in php no (you would have to upload it to your server to test it, so it would be a hassle) i would recommend dowloading it though(saves a lot of time and effort)
