You are correct, everyone should only use basic html hexadecimal coloring on our digital publications. 
But on a more serious note, Watermarks do help, but you also can look into creating a file with less resolution. Those are really the primary two tools to "deter" users from ripping off your intellectual property. What I mean by less resolution is give the user a preview of the artwork, but instead of using your 1260 dpi resolution Bitmap image, use a 96dpi gif image and put a watermark over the image. This would deter a fair majority of users with malicious intent from using your image elsewhere, because first he/she would need to crop out the watermark, then use some intensive editing software to take your low resolution file and transform it into the high-res form for additional manipulation.
