Grabbing data

Hello all, I'm new to Javascript and I'm inquiring about a certain specific process. Basically what I'm trying to do is, grab/copy/take text from a document (text) inside, then render it to my html document. Does anyone have any idea on how to accomplish this>

Probably through Ajax if you must do this with Javascript. I'd suggest a server side method (and perhaps a database) using PHP, ASP, etc.
