In an image editing program resize and optimize your images so that they are of the smallest byte-size reasonably possible with no apparent loss of quality and of the desired dimensions.

If you have tons of images, there are programs that can do this as a batch operation, fitting all images to a box's specified dimensions and applying optimization in one pass. I use Image Optimizer Pro, there must be others. If you just have 10 or so images, any decent image editing program like The Gimp, Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro may be used.
