Default So I downloaded Ubuntu but I'm having trouble

I popped the bootable CD in the drive yet it went into DOS and now I don't know what to do.

    Anyone got experience?

Did you set the BIOS to boot to the CD?

But it works now... other than my network, I'm still working on that one.

Yeah, so many people do that.

    What's up with your network?

Really, we don't know at all. I used a USB wireless connection and it doesn't see it at all for some reason. All I know is that is a belkin USB wireless G connector. And we have a linksys router. Networking is not my area of expertise so I don't really know that much about it at all. my dad does all the networking but he has never used Linux before.

Well, try this: plug in your USB wireless adapter, open a shell (or terminal, or console, or whatever: you'll probably find it in your desktop environment's menu), and do the following:
    1. Type su -
    2. Enter your root password
    3. Type lsusb
    4. Make a note of the line pertaining to your network adapter
    5. Post here.

Whenever I type this, the terminal asks for my password but it does not type?!

Well it wouldn't be much good if it showed your password for the whole world to see while you were entering it, would it?

No but shouldn't it show like bullets or asterisks or something of the sort where you typed? The curser doesn't move at all.

Edit: if I just type lsusb into the terminal it tells me ID 050D:705a

It doesn't show those for a reason... Say you were screen-casting. if people knew how many characters were in your root password, it would drastically decrease the time needed to brute force it.
