IE Developer Toolbar is not functioning

Hi all,

I've tried to install IE Developer toolbar in my PC (Window XP pro SP2). It installed smoothly. Opened the toolbar View->Explorer Bar->IE Developer Toolbar, it displayed and I clicked on 'Select element by click' option in the toolbar and nothing happend . It seems to be kind of disabled state.

Did anybody face this problem while using this toolbar? if you have any idea about this please let me know how can I enable and start using this tool.

Where did you get the addon? It could just add buttons and install spyware, if the site is not reputable.
/me hopes thats not whats going on...
If that doesn't work out for you, Firefox and https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60 may do what you need.

I tried that bar (or an earlier version of it, or something similar to it), it wasn't very (at all) intuitive, so I got rid of it. FF's developer extension is far superior in ease of use. There are direct ways of seeing generated code in IE that can be useful. If all else fails, IE's native error reporting can be deciphered about as easily as learning the developer bar (if it is anything like what I tried) you are talking about.

Yes I agree with you people as everybody knows the flexibility the Firefox addons provides. I am looking to get some addons like (Firebug/Web Developer in FF) in IE environment.

Ryan IE Developer Toolbar is an item developed by Microsoft's IE team claiming that it is a useful tool like some Firefox addons.

In my home PC where I use Windows Server 2003 this tools work as it supposed but in another PC where I use Windows XP SP2 it doesn't. I've found some reports of the similar kind of problems but no definite solutions for them specified.

That is a common problem with things Microsoft. This works on that MS platform and not on the other. You need this add on before the other add on will work properly, and sometimes the first add on isn't available on a particular MS platform, or must be installed, whereas it is standard (on most installations of the other MS platform), if you get my drift.

I might be willing to try out the particular IE Developer toolbar you are talking about in an XP environment and tell you what results I get, and what problems, if any, are intrinsic to such an attempt, if you would provide a link to the specific IE Developer toolbar you are talking about.

I say might, only because I have reservations when it comes to installing any software (overall performance issues like registry modification and additional installs that might be required - I like to run 'lean'), and if the instructions involved in installing this particular IE Developer toolbar raise any 'red flags' for me, I won't try it out, but I will tell you why I didn't, if that is what I decide.

I'm not sure that the above sounds as generous as I intended it to.

In any case, no one can be of any specific help unless we know the specific IE Developer toolbar you are trying to use.

I just had a good feeling about this one so I went ahead and installed it. I have only been playing around with it for a minute or so but the 'Select Element by Click' function works fine here under XP and IE 7. Apparently very similar to FF's developer toolbar's DOM inspector's function of similar utility.

The only thing that struck me during the download and install process worth noting in this regard is, if that function is truly disabled, there might be ownership issues. Like you installed it as one user on your machine and are now trying to access it as another user.

That's all I have at the moment, if anything else strikes me later, I will post it here. Let me know if what I said here rings any bells with you.

One other thing that occurs to me is that it may only be available for certain pages - say valid pages, or pages online, or pages offline.

I don't think so as I installed this and trying to use with the same user account (has admin privileges) in my XP machine.

I've tried to view google but it seems to be the toolbar itself somewhat like disabled I mean most of the items are disabled.

Then I would wonder if you are certain you have XP sp2 or not, as required (I have no problem accessing the bar while viewing Google). However, the download page did include mention of an IE web developers forum for reporting bugs and general discussion, etc:

Note: The above forum is not specifically for the toolbar, but would cover its installation and use.

And, as I indicated before - with things Microsoft, and really, computer stuff in general - not every thing will work with every system. But, since they seem interested in hearing about problems, I'd take it to that forum to see what kind of response you get.

Yes my PC uses Windows XP SP2.
