Question 301 Redirect - General Question

I have just completed a major realignment of one of our sites and, for the first time, have found a need to use the 301 redirect. It would seem logical to me that once the old pages are redirected through the .htaccess file, I should be able to completely delete the impacted old pages from the server thus saving space and keeping the environment clean but, before I go ahead and do it I was looking for some advice from someone who likely knows better than myself.

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, it's safe to delete the original files.
