I have noticed, however, that it does not work in the new version of Safari, Safari 3. Any chance that this can be looked into?

It has never worked (faded) with Safari (any version), as far as I know. This version:

does (in Safari 2 and 3, at least, probably in any version of Safari that supports any type of opacity style). DD tells me that he will update it sooner or later, but, until then, use the version at the above link.
