I am going to be paying for hosting next month, I want to have everything planned out ahead of time to get the site up soon.

I have thought it over, and I want a left side navigation bar, I can make one, I think, but I don't know how to keep it on the left side, and still be able to place text on the page without having it look bad. How do I do this? If possible, I don't want to use frames for it.

I don't know if this would be Javascript, HTML, XML, DHTML, or what, so I'm posting here.
