Adobe Premiere is good for a PC.
FCP (Final Cut Pro) is definitely the right route for macs.
Media 100, Avid, and Sony Vegas are all also used, but I haven't done anything with them myself.
iMovie (mac) and Windows Movie Maker (win XP*) are also good SIMPLE programs. If you know how to use them (easy, really), then you can do cool stuff, as long as you don't need complex options.
(*I assume Vista must have it too, though I have no idea, actually.)
If you want a freeware application (PC only), you could search for "Zwei-Stein" by the company "Thugs at Bay" (odd name, I know, but a good program). It's a nice, though not very intuitive editor, with a good number of features. It isn't the best, but it's free, and offers more than Windows Movie Maker. Google the name.

For Linux, LiVES is good (as far as I'm qualified to judge a video editor).

That looks quite decent, though not professinal-level, I don't think. It may very well match iMovie and Windows Movie Maker, though.
I'd like to test it, but I don't feel like dealing with figuring out how to compile for OSX or windows right now.
