It would depend upon the detector. I'd ask the manufacturer. I tend to think generally not as, infra red is used to communicate mouse and other data to the computer in some cases. So, most optical mice probably do not detect it in their optical sensor - to avoid possible interference, unless the directionality of the light renders this a non-issue.

Just as our eyes can't see infra red, I'd assume that the mouse wouldn't be designed to.... or blue, or green. Red is used and calibrated to the mouse. Maybe you'd get lucky and it would just work, but I'd be surprised.

i put a blue one in it the day i got it i do that with every opticle mouse i use and i know they work by detecting the reflection difference off of the surface and since infra-red is light i figure it would work

i will do it tonight just to see (if not maby a uv)

    Intersting. That might work, then.
    Fun to play with.

I think it would be more likely the closer it is to actual red (or violet).
UV rays and Infra-red light (heat).... fun toys

Scince everything from gamma radiation to mircowaves on the electromagnetic spectrum is all the same particle, moving at different speeds and frequencies, it isn't that hard to have a sensor pick up those particles at a different frequency.
especially in this case, because the frequency difference is not that much.
