The effect looks cool to me.
It seems like it would be very useful if there were a situation with a really long table.
I didn't inspect the code too thoroughly, so I can't comment on that side of things.

Yes, this would come in handy if one were trying to create a web-based application with data that need to be scrolled (whether it be too long for the page, or just because the user wants it to be scrollable). One thing though, why do the headings have the cursor as pointer (hand) as if they were linked to something? Were you going to incorporate a sorting function into this?
